I am taking all bets for anyone who wants to bet against me in the six Glover Park Advisory Neighborhood Commission election races in November. The ANC positions are up for election every two years, and the elections two years ago resulted in some rare turnover and competition amidst the restructuring of Glover Park’s ANC3B as a result of the once-a-decade redistricting. Glover Park went from five ANC members to six, with the addition of 3B06 – the northwestern section of Cathedral Heights. Glover Park has six Single Member Districts (SMD’s) each represented by an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and each representing approximately 2,000 residents.
This election cycle, we have one candidate each for five of the six SMD’s, while no one submitted a candidacy application for SMD-04, southwestern Cathedral Heights. As a result, the Glover Park elections are decided. I am sure there are many world leaders who would love this kind of certainty in their own elections. Ok, some have that certainty anyway…. We have three commissioners remaining in place: Kevin Lavezzo, Melissa Lane and Gupi Howie. Brian Turmail, who took two years off, is returning to fill the slot of Jackie Blumenthal, who is retiring after 15 years of service to the neighborhood in ANC3B. This SMD-02 is significant because it covers all of the Wisconsin Avenue commercial district. S. Robert Rodriguez will take the slot for SMD-06, the added area of Cathedral Heights in the redistricting plan.
If you are thinking about slipping into the SMD-04 slot or giving another candidate a run for their money, it’s too late – the deadline for application was August 7th. Though, there is a loophole on vacant positions – a write-in candidate has seven days from election day to affirm their candidacy and accept, so write yourself in! Otherwise, ANC3B can arrange either a public vote or an ANC decision on a single applicant sometime in 2025, if one steps up. Consider it – you can get into office without an election! I’m sure that never happened before.
Press that button at the kiosk at Guy Mason Rec Center on November 5th anyway for your ANC candidates. It feels good to get some votes even if you are a shoe-in, and it feels good when your candidate wins. Guy Mason is not an early voting center (10/28-11/3) but if you forgot to register, you still can do so on election day in person. FYI – noncitizen residents are eligible to vote in local elections in DC. So, send me your bets against my Glover Park ANC candidates, I have college to pay for soon…
