Hi neighbors! I’ve posted this on Glover Park Nextdoor, and am already speaking with two first grade parents and a potential learning assistant. The goal is to have 3-5 kids and we split the cost of the learning assistant.
DCPS is virtual until at least end November (good!) and I have a 1st grader who will need more than the minimal learning attention I can give during school hours (I work full time, albeit from home.) Help.
Anyone else with a 1st grader at Stoddert who wants to get a small group together for a few hours a day to do school work, and split cost on a learning assistant? Small group/pod, 3-5 kids, responsibly and safely set up, masks, etc. Please let me know.
And if anyone is, themselves, or knows of someone able and willing to be the learning assistant, please also let me know.
I’m worried and want to make sure my 1st grade child actually learns, while staying safe and healthy. You, too? Please let me know. We are just a few weeks out from school starting.
Thank you!!!

Good morning,
My name is Amy Wendel and I am a GP resident as well. I am a 28-year veteran educator and recently stepped away from a principal position in a DC charter school (after 20 years in the same school) to work as a professor at JHU in a teacher ed-residency graduate program. My work is wonderful and also flexible, but not with young children, whom I miss working with. I would love to discuss what you are looking for in a learning assistant/teacher and see if our needs match up. I taught first and second grade for all of my teaching career (before becoming an administrator) and have taught hundreds of children to read, write and understand early childhood math. I am available to teach a "pod" of children, or do 1:1 tutoring as needed. My email is: amywendel67@gmail.com and my cell number is (202) 431-9308. Please let me know if you wish to discuss further.
Best, Amy
